Summary:

Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) has proven to be effective in both adults and paediatric patients. Patients of all ages can be treated with SLIT effectively, however the continued development of allergies and potential to naturally outgrow them must be especially considered in paediatric patients. Data suggests starting between the ages of 3 to 5 years to be the optimal age to begin SLIT.

Development of Allergies in Children

Infant Allergies to Foods

Food allergies are the primary concern for children under the age of 1. Mothers who breastfeed may see signs of food allergy when they start to introduce solid foods at about 4-6 months. Typical fool allergies in infants include:

  • Milk

  • Eggs

  • Fish & Shellfish

  • Nuts

  • Soy

  • Wheat

While treatment of food allergies with Sublingual Immunotherapy is possible and effective, Biscuit Health does not treat food allergies outside of Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS) due to the risk of anaphylaxis with these antigens.

Child Allergies to Environmental Allergens

Environmental allergies start to manifest at about 18 months during toddlerhood. Symptoms such as itchy nose / eyes, nasal congestion, coughing, sneezing, asthma, or low energy could be a sign of allergic reactions to:

  • Dust mites

  • Outdoor pollens

  • Moulds

  • Pets

Biscuit Health can offer safe & effective treatment of environmental allergies through our sublingual immunotherapy treatment plans. While allergies begin to manifest at 18 months, we typically recommend patients hold off until 3 years of age as new allergies may manifest during this time, or the child may outgrow the allergy on their own.

Conclusion:

Sublingual immunotherapy represents a valuable option for managing allergic conditions, and evidence suggests that it can be initiated in pediatric populations. The existing literature, including guidelines from organizations such as the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI), supports the use of SLIT in children between 3 to 5 years old for specific allergens.
